Collection Policy

This policy outlines general criteria which guide the collection and selection of material to be digitised on the SALIDAA digital archive.

Aims of the digital archive

  • to highlight the creative achievements and developments of South Asian writers, artists, performs and musicians in England
  • to increase access to such resources for all interested users, such as, students, researchers, academics, primary and secondary teachers, the creative community, artistic and literary promoters, the media, and the wider community
  • to preserve material in danger of deterioration and of being lost
  • to support lifelong learning

Definitions

  • South Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka
  • Diaspora is used in its wider meaning of "dispersion or spreading, as of people originally belonging to one nation or having a common culture" (Oxford English Dictionary)
  • South Asian Diaspora indicates all those people of South Asian background born in Britain or South Asia, who are resident in Britain or, if no longer resident, who have spent a considerable amount of their life in Britain. People of South Asian background who were born in a country other than Britain or the Subcontinent but live or have lived in Britain are also included, such as those of South Asian origins from Africa and the Caribbean.

  • Literature (fiction, poetry, memoir)
  • Visual arts (painting, sculpture, photography, installations, mixed media)
  • Theatre
  • Dance
  • Music

Types of material

  • Text-based (no larger than A3):
    1. Creative writings including poetry, fiction, plays, lyrics (samples and excerpts)
    2. manuscripts
    3. author's diaries, letters, journals
    4. out-takes, storyboards, director's notes to cast and actors
    5. events and performances programmes
    6. conference proceedings
    7. posters
    8. flyers and leaflets
    9. invitation cards
    10. press-releases
    11. music scores
  • Visuals:
    1. images of art works
    2. photographs
    3. drawings of stage performances and costumes
    4. sketches of a variety of nature

Criteria

  1. balance in the representations of different South Asian backgrounds, and of art forms, gender and age
  2. material from writers, artists and performers who have had, in the indicative span of time of five years, at least:
    a. writers: two full publications;
    b. artists: three group or solo exhibitions;
    c. theatre and dance companies/performers: two performances
    d. musicians: three performances
  3. material from existing and defunct organisations who have played an important role in fostering the development of South Asian literature and arts in England
  4. material relating to events (conferences, workshops, festivals) which have been important for the literary and artistic development of South Asian literature and arts in England
  5. material written in English (literatures in the Sub-continental languages will be added as a priority at the next stage of the archive's development)
  6. material at risk of deterioration and in need of preservation
  7. material not easily available from other archives, libraries, or on the internet
  8. material which can be easily cleared for copyright
  9. material by writers, artists and performers whose work has had a considerable impact on the historical and artistic life of Britain
  10. balance between material which is of interest to different users: eg. historical, creative, aesthetic, documentary, bio-bibliographical, educational etc...)
  11. material with the potential to be repackaged for the production of learning resources with an eye to commercial viability
